Column Chart with Variance, a Microsoft Power BI dashboard from 3AG Systems

What is a variance report?

A variance report is generally used by financial reporting teams to compare expected outcomes with actual results. The goal of this type of report is to easily show the difference, or variance from the baseline.

A well-designed variance report not only shows the variance against plan, but the relative size of that variance.

More details

Featured in Microsoft's August 2018 Power BI desktop update, these Power BI custom visuals are designed for easily comparing time series data. It is built for reporting actual, forecast, planned, and previous year data and allows users to quickly identify when a series deviates from its baseline.

This and other power bi reports from 3AG Systems apply information density principles including the sparing use of colors using the following schema:

  • solid black for current year
  • grey for previous year
  • hollow for budget
  • shaded for forecast

It is highly recommended to use these charts only for time series data. For non-time series reporting please consider using bar charts, like the Bar Chart With Absolute Variance.

You can get the MS BI visual from Microsoft AppSource here.
